Workshop on itineraries

The two-day workshop Reisende in und aus dem Orient und ihre Literatur (12–13 August 2018, in Fleischstraße 2, room FL2/01.01) is organized by CSME Master and Ph.D students from the University of Bamberg and the University of Nuremberg-Erlangen under supervision of guest lecturer Dr Elke Hartmann. The workshop compares the manifold perspectives of travellers to, from, and within the Near and Middle East.

Bayerisches Orientkolloquium Summer '18

The Bayerisches Orientkolloquium is a biannual lecture series jointly organized by the Universities of Bamberg and Erlangen-Nuremberg, hosted in summer by the former and in winter by the latter. The programme for the current series is available below.

CSME goes to Paris!

The master's programme CSME is offering a study trip to Paris in the upcoming summer semester (27 May 2018 to 31 May 2018). The study trip is geared towards the subject areas of the programme and will be accompanied by members of the teaching staff.

Touring the City of Lights, students will get to know important research institutions, libraries, and museums relevant to their field of study, including the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Louvre, the Musée du Quai Branly, and more. Students will make new contacts and learn on-the-go with local experts. Accommodations will be in a hostel in the historic district of Le Marais.

All Master's students of Oriental Studies in Bamberg and Erlangen (incl. students of Interreligious Studies) are eligible. Expenses for travel, accommodations, and entrance fees are estimated to be around 400 EUR; student subsidies are available.

Call for applications: Visiting professor

The bilingual Master's Programme Cultural Studies of the Middle East offered by the Universities of Bamberg and Erlangen-Nuremberg welcomes applications for the position of One-Year Visiting Professor for Cultural Studies of the Middle East (1 October 2018 to 31 August 2019).

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony for the master's degree Cultural Studies of the Middle East will take place on 21 November 2017, 6 pm, at the University of Bamberg. All prospective students are invited. The evening commences with a talk by guest speaker Prof. Dr Stefan Leder (Orient-Institut Beirut and University of Halle).

The two-week Kurdish Language Autumn School (4–15 September 2017) offers intensive language courses in the main varieties of Kurdish, plus a mix of workshops and seminars by leading experts in the field of Kurdish linguistics.

Sorani and Kurmanji will be offered at two levels for the full duration of the course, while shorter courses in Hawrami and Zazaki will also be available. Additionally, participants may choose from a variety of afternoon workshops, for example close reading of literary and academic Kurmanji, selected topics in sociolinguistics, or comparative Kurdish morphosyntax. Participants in the language courses will be eligible for earning European Credit Transfer points.

KLAS2017 is hosted by the Institute for Oriental Studies at the University of Bamberg.
